What material do I use to recover rugs?

Ive got some old rugs but it seems a shame to bin them as they were expensive. I have thought about reviving by re covering covering them. I dont know what kind of material to use though. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    One doesn’t usually recover rugs. Most folks would just replace them.
