How do I clean area rugs?

My family recently moved in to a rather large home that has not one stitch of carpet in it, just very nice linoleum throughout. I have bought some 5X8 area rugs and am wondering how to really clean them well. We don’t wear shoes in the house and I spot clean with Resolve spray in the event of a spill but know that they will still get dirty and want to know what the rest of you do to keep them looking nice.
