The reason why rugs are so popular

February 4, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

When it comes to the interior decor of homes across the globe, rugs have always been – and still remain to this day – a sturdy favourite for many people.

One of the reasons for this is the fact that rugs provide a fantastic way to transform the look and feel of any space in your home very quickly and with very little effort. A neutral space can suddenly come alive with a lively rug placed at its centre; can turn into a play-area of charm and wonder with nothing other than a playful children’s rug; can become a sophisticated space in your home with a stylish contemporary rug, and much more.

And all this can be accomplished in as long as it takes you to unravel the rug of your choice. The fact is that very few things can change the mood in a room with this much ease, and the benefits nearly always outweigh the cost.

Another plain reason for the popularity of rugs is that they can often be a luxurious addition to the home, a place where adults can relax and enjoy the soft high pile of a quality rug, where children can sit and play in comfort and – more often than not – a perfect spot for the family pet to take it easy.

The quality of any rug will vary, of course, according to how the rug was made and the supplies used in the process, but ordinarily you can obtain rugs of very good quality for considerably less than you may imagine.

Good places to buy a rug include your local carpet store and any online rug store, of which there are plenty.  Remember that there is a lot of healthy competition out there between rug sellers, so discovering a bargain is generally not too challenging.

Can a rug be a treat?

December 16, 2009 by · 1 Comment

large rug imageThis week we have a great rug conundrum and a drop of surprising psychology to add to the mix:

Can a rug Be a treat?

When was the last time you treated yourself to something special? Something that didn’t vanish in a dozen bites, or in half as many gulps?

When was the last time you treated yourself to a rug?

A rug you say? That’s not a treat!

Well, we here at Modern Style Rugs (can you guess what’s coming?) agree with you.

We actually do.

But we also disagree of course.

Or rather, we have a clause, an amendment, a correction of sorts…

We always do. It comes with being experts in quality rugs.

So, back to the debate:

Is a rug a treat, or not a treat?

Some say that a cheap rug is not a treat; that only a quality rug, or a great rug, or the best rugs you can get your hands on are treats.

Well, we’re not going to disagree with any of those things. We love quality rugs: it’s what we do best. And for the record, we don’t dislike cheap rugs either: you can read our previous post where we discuss whether cheap rugs are a good idea to see where we stand on this matter.

But out take on the Christmas rug debate is a tad more elaborate than that, and we’re sure that you’ll agree with us when you hear our side of the rug story.

Modern Style Rugs believe that a rug is a treat. And not just any old treat: a rug is actually a fantastic treat: not only does it bring you joy at the point of purchase, just like any other gift or present, but it adds to your home. If it’s part of your home, then it’s invariably part of your life. And since a rug compliments your home, then it compliments your life, your choice and your style.

Unlike many presents, a rug is a treat that you get to enjoy every day, for a long time!

Isn’t that one special treat? Well of course it is!

If you’re wondering how you could possibly have missed this back when we first asked, then simply do a quick assessment on your notion of a treat (therein is the key to the mystery).

A little perspective in rug psychology

Most of us see chocolates, snacks, calory-high foods, a special holiday break and things of this nature as treats.

And this is fine, of course. But all the above present short-lived experiences. They’re here one minute, then they’re gone.

In contrast to the above ‘treats’ rugs are around for a long time, especially good quality rugs.

This contrast creates a natural disconnect, because of the way in which we tend to think about teats.

But the reality is that, side by side, a rug covers everything a treat does, and goes a long way further to add a lot more value to our lives… so much more than any short lived treat.

To recap…

  • a nice rug bring you joy at the point of purchase
  • a great rug makes your home look great
  • visitors to your home think positively of you when presented with a stylish rug
  • you get to relive the same joyful experience each day you see your quality rug, and each time your visitors compliment you on your choice of rug

Now, that’s what we call a real treat!
