how do you add material to a round rug in 3ds max?

So i made a cylindar in 3ds max, but then when i want to add a cool pattern to the rug, the material ends up normally on the long side of the cylindar (not the two cicular faces, if that makes sense) but on the faces the material kind of messes up and you cant actually see the detail at all. is there a special way to do this, so that the material shows up the same detail on all three sides?
also, do any of you know any good tutorials for a haunted house? like i really need a haunted house couch and walls and cuboards and candles??
