Must oriental rugs be professionally cleaned, or is there a way to do it myself?

I washed some rugs and dried them, now all I smell is burnt rubber. Any ideas on how to get rid of the smell!?
Are there any tricks to flattening a new area rug?
It they are hand made by someone in the middle east who spent a year hand-knotting it and is of noticeable value you should call in a pro. They will roll it up and clean it in their factory.
If instead it is a cheap machine-made one from Brussels you could try cleaning it yourself.
