Is it necessary to put rug pads under area rugs on hardwood floors?

Well, I do because otherwise we would all have broken legs because they slide around when turning the corner from the dining room to the hallway. But I have also seen some marks on the floor from the grids on the pads. These seem to happen when it gets wet, or if the pad is poor quality. The best solution seems to be to occasionally pull back the rug and the pad and clean the floor, and put it back a fraction of an inch different. Our floors are old anyway so I don’t worry about the finish that much.
YES!!! the rug looks richer, it doesn’t scracth the floor, and dirt flows through, so you can hang things on the clothes line and really give them a clean smell. esp. if it is a good rug .yo dont want to shampoo it to death. really death!! i have a wallmaart rug in my library room ,because i am doing it over and i treat it the same and i may keep it cause if you take care of it most people cant tell the difference.p.s. when i hang them on the line :i use a whole bottle of fabreeze periodically applied . pretty cheap in the long run!
