How to flatten my new handwoven rug?

We bought a new handwoven rug of good quality 2 weeks ago. It appeared to lay flat in the store, was at the bottom of a pile of about 6 rugs laying on top of it, all of them flat.

It was rolled up at the store so we could fit into our car to transport it home.

Now, after 2 weeks, it still won’t lay flat! There are bumps along many of the edges. Trying to place heavy boxes on them for days at a time doesn’t seem to help. Any suggestions?

Dampen it just a bit, not soaking but damp (on the back side) and then tape it flat on the floor using duct tape or similar. You’ll need at least one other person, to help you smooth it and hold it flat and tight until you get it taped down. Leave it until it dries, a few days should do it.

The backing of your rug has gotten creased in transport. Dampening and stretching it is like stretching a canvas before painting.
