How should I clean an area rug on a hardwood floor?

We have a very large area rug that is made from a carpet remnant. It is on our hardwood floor. It desperately needs to be cleaned and rather than hiring someone to do it, I was wondering if we could do it ourselves. I’m assuming that steaming it while it’s on the hardwood is a bad idea. We live in MN and it is getting pretty cold outside, so that is not an option. What would a professional cleaner do?

I have the same thing, area rug on hardwood floor, I use my Hoover Dual V on it and go over it several times to remove excess water, the Dual V does a great job and carpet is dry to touch in less than a half hour, you can also set a fan so it will blow on the carpet…I also have one of the skid resistant mats under the carpet.

Roll the carpet up, spread the area with sheet plastic, and roll the carpet back out. Then use a shampooer/extractor on it. When it is completely dry, remove the plastic!
