How do you make rag rugs?

I have all the stuff but am not sure exactly what you do with the piece of rag, do you push the loop of rag tho’ (from right side) and then under and up securing the ends thro the loop on the right side?

In the old days it was the regular thing for tab rugs as we called them to be made in the home, my mother used to have us help her, new rags were made for Christmas and again for the Whitsuntide.
The canvas/hessian was stretched in a wooden frame, the tabs were cut about 5 inches in length about 1 and 1/s inches wide with the ends cropped obliquely, a pattern was sketched on the canvas, and using a "prodder" the tab was inserted from the top to about half its length, then other half was inserted through a hole 3 or 4 stands of canvas away. This was repeated using the different coloured tabs until complete.
The edges of the canvas were then turn back and sewn up, and a back canvas added and sewn in place.
We used to obtain the material to make the tabs from the local tailor these being the off cuts from the suits he made, also old suits and trousers were cut up to make the tabs.
    Good luck .
