What it does is mapping your object to a 2D map.
To map the top/bottom of a cylinder you need to use a planar map, and align it to the top/bottom of the cylinder.
You can add more than one of these modifiers, each on a different texture channel.
On the texture you can choose which mapping you use, and in the case of explicit map channel - select the texture channel you created using the modifier (the default is 1).</description>
