How can I secure a rug that I have over top of carpet?
I have a 5″x7″ football playroom type (cheap with rubber backing) rug in my sons room over top of his carpeting, but it keeps moving and bunching. I have tried rubber mats and rug tape. I have even tried nailing the corners, but if you walk over the nails they can hurt your feet. Any suggestions?

There is a special fabric underlining that you can buy to lay under a rug on top of another rug. Carpet and housewares stores usually stock it. It’s a non-woven fabric like Pellon with a slightly sticky treatment. I’ve used it with some success with area rugs when I rented a carpeted apartment some years ago. I can’t guarantee that it will work with the rubber backed rug though (mine were all woven back). The reason rugs creep on carpet is that each time you step on them the pile in the carpet underneath squashes down in the direction of the nap and then rebounds, catching and moving the rug on top.
You might try covering the rubber backing with strips of duct tape. that will make the rug a little stiffer and also more slippery so the pile of the carpet doesn’t grab the rubber.
