Rubber backing on mats makes pads unnecessary. However, if there is NO rubber on the back of the mat or rug, you need to protect your wood floors. You can buy athin rubber mat sold for this purpose, which prevents the floors from being marred. Also the rugs won’t slip and slide across your floor.

Generally the rubber backing does NOT rub off onto wood floors. If you have a backing on the floor and something gets spilled like a drink, the rug needs to be picked up and aired or else the backing just may stick. PLUS, the liquid will ruin the wood underneath.

You should use padding made specifically for area rugs. They range in size from a 2×4 runner, to a 9×12 area rug. You can find these pads at any local Home Depot or Lowes. If you use carpet padding then you will definately scratch your floors because carpet padding is made out of recycled fibers that have different densities.
You dont need padding for a small mat as long as it is an indoor mat. Outdoor mats are usually thicker and waterproof. Good Luck!
